Doornroosje (Sleeping Beauty)

The program for the so called TGP-terrain in Nijmegen is ambitious and daring: a vibrant centre for pop music, student housing and an underground bicycle parking on an unique, but complex location. The redevelopment requires intelligent urban planning modifications and offers the opportunity to create a station square that is consistent with the image and ambitions of the City of Nijmegen: an urban vestibule that does justice to large cultural attractions. In affiliation with the train- and bus station additional value is created by facilitating the traffic circulation and reconnecting the city fabric.

On the north side of the station a colorful facade complements the original design by Ravensteijn. It is here where the functions of pop centre Doornroosje are situated - clearly recognisable by the combination of the robust colorful volumes (the music halls and backstage) and the transparent, layered volumes of the foyers and the cafe-restaurant. On top of the cultural plinth a solid residential building with a clear pattern of windows in a brickwork facade, offers a home to approximately 340 students.

The pop venue and the public underground bicycle parking are visually and functionally easily accessible and clearly connected to the station area. The generous entrance of the housing offers a welcoming connection to the living environment. The compact, efficient layout of the development offers optimal logistics for the pop centre, and at the same time leaves space at the recessed
ground- level for extra parking or a possible extension. The superstructure of the student housing encloses a green courtyard, which offers a oasis of tranquility in this dynamic city district.
