Rotterdammers can have their say on renewal of iconic library

Five design teams are going to work on the Central Library on the Hoogstraat in Rotterdam. They will make a sketch design, which can be seen in the library from February. The library is undergoing a major renovation, the goal being to start work in 2025. Rotterdammers can think along.

''The task is to tackle the building inside and out.'' So Kemperman has no idea yet what the renovated library will look like. That is up to the architects,'' he says. The building will not be demolished just yet, but stripped to the bone.

Twenty-two design teams participated in the tender. Of these, 5 remained: Combination KCAP, Kraaijvanger Architects, NL Architects, Powerhouse Company and Team Valade. As of today they will start working on a new sketch design. Rotterdammers can also contribute ideas about the library. Soon there will be city talks at several locations in the city in which they can make suggestions.
