Shell wants to open the world's largest hydrogen plant on Maasvlakte 2, called Holland Hydrogen 1, by 2024. In early 2022, the project team hopes to get approval for the investment from Shell's top management. A project team has been working on the plan since 2019. The Port of Rotterdam Authority's so-called conversion park is the designated site for green hydrogen production in the port. Shell's plant is twenty times larger than Europe's current largest hydrogen plant. Green hydrogen can be produced with electricity from a wind farm that Shell is constructing together with Eneco in the North Sea. The intention is to supply the green hydrogen directly to trucks.
