Manifesto: Against Abstraction

ForArchitecture NL, Dirk Jan Postel has written a manifesto against abstraction. After all, the consequences of abstraction are always real. "A far-reaching increase in abstraction in our daily actions is emblematic of our time, abstract in the sense of being pulled away from reality." The central question is: how do we reinforce the experience of reality? The solution lies in a careful recovery of the links with reality. To start with the architecture. We therefore strive for buildings that are directly experienced, without the intervention of symbolism, (side) intentions or knowledge of the design. To achieve this, we believe in a compact construction team where direct contact with the subcontractors is necessary to keep control within the complex construction process. Keeping control during the design process requires a critical approach to digital drawings. Digital drawing programs introduce abstractions and force early precision. Digital design to loss of overview. Innovation only occurs close to reality. It is a grateful process. The first step is to refuse the status quo, the inevitable habits. Innovation is the best way to get down to the facts with your nose. Read the entire article here.
