The former, seventeen-window, BANKGEBOUW had to exude strength and reliability. The result was a building built in a traditional architectural style with a rectangular floor plan and flat roofs. Originally, the floor plan was U-shaped so that sufficient light entered from the rear. Due to the merger with the Amsterdam Bank, this opening was closed during the construction of the building. To still provide sufficient daylight, the height of the extension was limited to two floors. The construction is made of a skeleton of reinforced concrete. The brick facades feature heavily pronounced plinths and cantilevered cornices. The west facade is partially blind due to the planned construction of the U.S. Consulate. The south facade contains the service entrance.
