PwC’s office building in the Nieuwe Meer innovation district (Schinkelkwartier) is the first PwC office in the Netherlands to meet the Dutch Green Building Council’s Paris Proof standard. A key step in this process was the installation of 3,200 solar panels on the building and the adjacent car park. The completion of the sustainability project was celebrated today with the partners involved, including the City of Amsterdam and the asset manager of the owner, Quest Funds.
Paris Proof as a measurable benchmark
Paris Proof means that a building in use consumes a maximum of 70 kWh/m² per year. For existing buildings, this typically requires a reduction of 50–70%. At Westgate II, energy consumption has been reduced in stages by approximately 60% in recent years—through measures such as optimising systems, switching to LED lighting, the use of a heating and cooling source (natural gas-free) and the recent extension with solar panels.

Generate locally, use locally
The solar panels are installed on the roof of the office building, on a new canopy at the entrance to the car park, and on the roof of the parking deck in front of the building. The electricity generated is used for, amongst other things, climate control systems and lighting, and for charging the electric vehicle fleet. Additional charging points are being installed; a battery is also being provided to use locally generated energy more intelligently and to limit peak loads on the grid. The installation can generate up to 1,000,000 kWh per year.
Collaboration in a developing area
For us, this project has a special significance. We were previously responsible for the design of the PwC office. The sustainability upgrade of Westgate II has been realised in consultation with the owner/asset manager Quest Funds, the City of Amsterdam, PwC, and other stakeholders, in line with the Schinkelkwartier area development.
Through smart interventions and the maximum use of available surfaces for energy generation, we are preparing the building for a sustainable and energy-efficient future.
