Central Library Haarlemmermeer, Hoofddorp (NL)
Daniela Schelle
The Central Library is an integrated part of the Culture Building, but was fully developed as an independent entity. It is a nearly endless reservoir of knowledge and culture in the form of books and digital media. The grand, open spaciousness of the reading rooms situated around the central atrium invites visitors to browse through books and other media.
The round shape of the library is reflected in the lay out of the interior, which is organised along a circular route. The routing is not based on a classic library concept, but on ‘client seduction’ as is also used in retailing. All proven principles of retailing have been implemented: genre classification (‘shops’), a clear themed routing, a store-like design (colours, material, furniture), product display, and a strong and unambiguous façade image (created by the striking green copper and the strong orange company colour).
The information is presented thematically in clusters, which can be found via a routing marked in the floor. Because of the wide stairs and banisters, the atrium can also be used for lectures and speeches.
In the most urban area of the library a news café is situated. This mix of program and atmosphere is typical for the way nowadays culture and leisure are dealt with. Also here the catering facilities are directly located on the passage, creating a lively image, pulling the visitors into the building.
