Plans for restructuring the "Van Heekplein" and its surroundings included a decision to expand the volume of the V&D department store dating from the late 1960s by 20 metres on the side facing the square. The column structure and the bearing capacity of the existing building made it possible, without the use of complex expensive construction, to realise two floors, each of which can accommodate 17 housing units of approximately 100 to 130 m².

In adding the housing units, it was assumed for architectonic purposes that the footprint of the existing building block would be continued throughout its entire height in order to present a visually unified and intact building block. The route taken to reach the housing units, which includes its own striking entrance, is a surprising experience. From the busy shopping square, the route enters a large, beautifully designed courtyard garden where the hustle and bustle of the city are quickly replaced by quiet green surroundings. The use of materials also contributes to this contrast in environments.
