Temple de l'Amour II

Dirk Jan Postel

> interior design

Temple de l'Amour II was conceived after the accidental discovery of a vault in the abutment of a former railway bridge. 2.5 metres of limestone was cut away to reveal this beautiful concealed space. On top of the bridge a pavilion was made for contemplation, as a counterpoint to the existing 18th century folly called Temple de l’Amour. Any interfering structures have been avoided. Only the glass supports the roof, creating a full panorama while enhancing the beauty of the existing stonework. The roof emphasizes the sense of continuous, extended space.

The design aims to express the magic of the roof floating in mid-air. Structural details have been kept to a minimum. It almost looks like the glass is cutting through the ancient stone.
