Agricultural College Almere, Almere (NL)
Annemiek Bleumink with Vincent van der Meulen
The objective for the new facilities of the Groenhorst College (GHC) and the Christian Agriculture High school (CAH) is to realise a communal housing on one location in Almere Poort. The combination of both institutions is unique and links theoretical and practical education to nature, building and the built environment with sustainability as major theme. Practical experience plays an important part in all courses. The new facility will act as a testing ground for the implementation of functional green in the urban environment.
The design has a strong horizontal articulation connecting both educational institutions. Both can be recognized as independent entities by the applied façade technique and expression. As a result of the use of innovative, functional green vegetation, the building changes colour in accordance with the seasons. On the inside the choice of materials, the use of spaces and the lay out of the learning plazas emphasise the identity of both institutions. A shared atrium and a communal learning plaza at the higher level offer all students an inspiring and adventures environment.
The new 6.000 m2 building will accommodate 1.200 students. In addition to the theory and practice spaces, the complex includes an open learning centre, offices, a large atrium with a restaurant, several meeting rooms and 3.000 m2 parking. Approximately 25% of the building will be equipped for communal use
