Concert hall De Doelen in Rotterdam was built in the 1960s by the Kraaijvanger brothers. After 40 years, the municipal building needed major renovation. The changes were carried out with care, so that the balance of the original design was preserved. Not only has the Great Hall, with its 2,000 seats, been renovated, but the entrance area and foyers have also been given a makeover. The various semi-public meeting areas, large and small, are now more accessible and inviting.
All the interventions in the existing design are architectural, functional, acoustic or technical improvements. Unused spaces have become places of interest, and the building now makes encounters possible in appropriate settings. In addition, the interior climate has been improved and, thanks to a sophisticated lighting plan, appropriate atmospheres can be created for different orchestral ensembles and audiences.
