The building complex of printing office SDU at Binckhorstlaan in The Hague was designed by Kraaijvanger architect Hans Goverde in 2003. Now transformation developer Binck Zuid and Kraaijvanger Architects are going to transform this into an area for work and living. The development program stands for sustainable preservation of the outstanding office building, which will be transformed into apartment building De Binck with seventy apartments. The company hall of 26.000 m2 will be dismantled reusable to offer space to another 150 new houses.
Hans Goverde will lead the transformation from work to living. He sees a fantastic opportunity to transform a relatively young building and to make it more green: “the office building is tolerate to the transformation into apartments and offers a great opportunity to make the building zero-energy. At the finish of the transformation De Binck is a building with seventy special and sustainable apartments in which the higher level apartments will offer a great view over The Hague.”
Besides apartments there will also be general provisions, such as parcel service for the residents, communal rooftop terraces and bars in the neighbourhood. The ground on the border of The Hague, Voorburg and Rijswijk is surrounded by water, giving the pier an open character the new area creates a bridge between Voorburg-West and the Bickhorst.
The development of the Bickhorst of mainly work environment to a mix of working and living the Binckeiland receives an extra impulse with the 220 apartments. The new sustainable residential area is a welcoming addition to the housing stock of the municipality The Hague.
